History

  • 1407 : Busan Port is first opened.
  • 1876 : Development after Busan becomes an international port.
  • 1963 : Raised to Directly Governed City status, Busan develops into a leading city for international trade and marine tourism.
  • 1995 : Upgraded to a Metropolitan City, Busan grows to become a central city in the Pacific Rim of the 21st Century.

Regional Characteristics

  • Busan is located on the southeastern tip of the Korean Peninsula. It is South Korea’s No.1 international trade port that also has an international airport. Therefore, it serves as a gateway to connect South Korea to neighboring Japan and countries in Western Europe.
  • As South Korea’s national power has increased and the world’s international economic sphere has shifted from Atlantic coastal states to Pacific coastal states since the 1970s, Busan has played its role as an advanced base that can lead the Pacific era.
