History

  • 1896 : With the reorganization of the 13-province system, the name Gyeonggi-do Province is revived. (three bu and 34 counties)
  • 1960 : The provincial office is relocated from Seoul to Suwon, the current location.
  • 1980 : Administrative districts are changed to 18 cities, 18 counties, 30 towns, and 155 townships.
  • 1990 : Administrative districts are changed to 23 cities and eight counties.
  • 2001 : Hwaseong County and Gwangju County are elevated to Hwaseong City and Gwangju City, respectively. (25 cities and six counties)

Regional Characteristics

Located in the west-central area of the Korean Peninsula, Gyeonggi-do Province borders the west coast and surrounds the capital city of Seoul, which is the heart of the peninsula.
