History
- 1931 : Promoted to Gwangju Town.
- 1949 : Changed to Gwangju City.
- 1986 : The “Act on Installing Directly Governed City” is promulgated, and Gwangju is promoted to a Directly Governed City following Busan, Daegu, and Incheon.
Regional Characteristics
Gwangju Metropolitan City is located in central Honam, located on the southwest part of the Korean Peninsula. As the center of the Honam region, it has developed basic sectors such as commerce, finance, information, administration, education, tourism, and industry, and it has advantageous geographical conditions that have the potential to be developed into a central city.
