Jong-kyoung Hong Appointed as the New Secretary-General2017-05-23

Jong-kyoung Hong was appointed as Secretary-General of the Association of the North East Asia Regional Governments on May 19, 2017.

 Secretary-General Hong said, “While North East Asia is a region facing various diplomatic conflict, it is also an important region that has the potential to play a pivotal role in leading the Asia Pacific era of the 21st century. Moreover, it was during such times of conflict that NEAR had been the point of exchange and cooperation for the last 20 years. Therefore,we will continue to make every effort to allow NEAR to maintain its central role in sustaining the mutual prosperity and peace of the region.”

Secretary-General Hong, born in Gampo, Gyoengju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, spent his childhood in Pohang. He graduated from Gyeongbuk High School and Seoul National University with a BA in French Language and Literature. He passed the 17th national High Diplomatic Service Examination in 1983, and served as Consul in New York, Consul General in Istanbul, and most recently, as the Vice Governor for International Relations, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province.
