NEAR Promotes Associate Membership through Exchange with Cambodia and Kazakhstan2018-01-16

The NEAR Secretariat has been engaged in activities for the activation of the 'Associate Membership System of major metropolitan municipalities outside Northeast Asia' adopted at the 2016 Irkutsk General Assembly. NEAR Secretariat and member regional governments participated the “HCMC-Gyeongju World Culture Expo 2017”, co-hosted by the regional government of Gyeongsangbuk-do, a NEAR member, and Ho Chi Minh City in November 2017.


In 2018, the NEAR Secretariat continues to actively promote associate membership. From January 10 to 12, a delegation including Nam Gun, Director of the Department of Planning and Public Relations and Jung En-young, officer of the same department visited Phnom Penh City and Siem reap Province, Cambodia. During the visit, the delegation met with Nuon Pahrat, Vice Governor of the Phnom Penh Capital Municipal Government on 11, and Nuon Puthera, Administration Director of Siem Reap Provincial Government on 12 to discuss the possibility of joining NEAR as an associate member. Men Sam An, the Deputy Prime Minister of Cambodia had expressed His interest in the Cambodian metropolitan cities and provinces joining NEAR as associate members when he attended the HCMC-Gyeongju World Culture Expo 2017.


Meanwhile, Secretary-General Hong Jong-kyoung held a luncheon meeting with Dulat Bakishev, Ambassador of Kazakhstan in Republic of Korea on January 12 to discuss Almaty City joining NEAR as an associate member. Ambassador Bakishev mentioned that he would offer his support in the process, stating, “As Almaty City, an internationalized city is the center of economic, cultural, and educational exchange in Kazakhstan, it would be the most suitable city to take part in NEAR as an associate member.”
