Liaoning Province, China, sent an official letter and application form applying for official membership to the NEAR Secretariat on March 23.


Since 1998, at the outset of NEAR, Liaoning Province has attended the General Assembly, meetings of the Working Committee, and various subcommittee meetings on environment, economics, disaster prevention, etc. It has promoted international exchange and cooperation with every region around the world in various areas.


NEAR Secretary General Kim Ok-chae sent a congratulatory letter upon the application for membership to Governor Liu Ning of Liaoning Province on March 24. Once Liaoning Province’s membership is approved at the 13th General Assembly, which will be held in the fall this year, the total number of NEAR member regional governments will rise to 79.


Liaoning Province, one of the three provinces of Northeast China, has a population of 43.5 million and covers an area of 148,600. Its gross regional domestic product, or GRDP, is USD 384.6 billion (GRDP per capita is USD 8,835). It is known for equipment manufacturing, raw materials engineering, and petrochemical engineering.
