On Wednesday, November 5, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the government to promote the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor (TATC), which links Siberian rivers with the Northern Sea Route (NSR), as a national strategic project.
The route is characterized by its connection of major rivers running through NEAR member government regions, including the Yenisei River (Krasnoyarsk Krai), the Lena River (Republic of Sakha), and the Ob River (Altai Krai, Tomsk Oblast, Novosibirsk Oblast).
In addition, the Russian government plans to simultaneously promote the domestic production of vessels operating in the Arctic—such as container ships, bulk carriers, LNG carriers, and tugboats—and strengthen the logistics hub functions of ports in the Far East. Priority sections for development include Nizhnelenskoye–Tongjiang (China), Blagoveshchensk–Heihe (China), and the Tumen River bridge toward North Korea.
Through this initiative, Russia aims to reduce dependence on the Suez Canal, enhance its competitiveness in energy exports, and accelerate the creation of a new maritime economic belt between Europe and Asia.
Development in the Arctic region, including areas governed by NEAR member governments, is expected to bring significant changes to the logistics landscape of Northeast Asia.
