NEAR Secretariat Holds 2019 NEAR International Forum on Cruise Tourism2019-02-26

The 2019 NEAR International Forum on Cruise Tourism was held on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at the POSCO International Center. It was themed, “Cruise Tourism in the New Era of Northeast Asia.” This forum was a follow-up of the first Korea-Russia Regional Cooperation Forum which was held in November 2018. The forum was co-organized by the NEAR Secretariat and Gyeongbuk Policy Institute (Director: Kim Jun-hong) and International Cruise Industry Institute (Director: Kim Jong-nam), and it was supported by Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, Pohang City, Gyeongju City of ROK, and Gyeongbuk Culture and Tourism Corporation


The forum was attended by about 300 participants, including Vice Governor Jun Woo-hyun covering for Governor Lee Chul-woo, Chairman Jang Gyeongshik of the Provincial Council, Mayor Lee Kang-duck of Pohang City, and Mayor Joo Nak-young of Gyeongju City. Participants from NEAR member regional governments from four countries including China, Japan, Korea, and Russia including Consul-General Gennady G Ryabkov of the Russian Federation in Busan, Director Hwang Jin-Hoe, of KMI, Pakholkova Nataliia, Director of Tourism from Sakhalin Region, Valeryi Nagornyi, Head of Vladivostok Sea Terminal, Svetachev Aleksander, Director of Planning of Diligans Kamchatka, Mishima Osamu, Director of Kyoto Prefecture, Jimmy Peng of Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal, experts, and representatives of cruise business sectors such as Silver Sea Cruise, Costa Cruises, Carnival Corporation Korea, Panstar Cruise, Lotte Tour, and Hyundai Asan.



The forum commenced with opening remarks from NEAR Secretary-General Hong Jong-kyoung, congratulatory remarks from Vice-Governor Jun Woo-hyun of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, Chairman Jang Gyeongshik of the Provincial Council, Mayor Lee Kang-duck of Pohang City, and Mayor Joo Nak-young of Gyeongju City and Consul-General Gennady G Ryabkov of the Russian Federation in Busan. Then Hwang Jin-Hoe, Director of KMI and a member of the Presidential Committee on Northern Economic Cooperation of ROK delivered a keynote speech under the theme of ‘Characteristics of Cruise Tourism, and Development Strategy of Cruise Tourism in Pan East Sea Rim.’

 
Discussions followed the opening ceremony, and they were presided over by Director Kim Jong-nam of International Cruise Industry Institute and Director Kim Jun-hong of Gyeongbuk Policy Institute. The discussions covered the topics of ‘Development Strategies for the Cruise Tourism in Northeast Asia’ and ‘Intercity Plans for the Revitalization of Cruise Tourism in Northeast Asia.’ In each session, invited experts in the field of Cruise Tourism made presentations introducing great cases of each regional government, and panelists discussed and answered questions.



Secretary-General Hong Jong-kyoung, in his opening remarks, stated, "The topics and opinions discussed at the NEAR International Forum on Cruise Tourism are expected to contribute to the development of the tourism industry in Northeast Asia through cruise in an era of improved relationships of the two Koreas and the activation of Northern economic cooperation.




After the forum, the participants visited various tourist attractions of Pohang and Gyeongju, cities at which cruise ships stop, in anticipation of the practical cooperation and exchange on cruise tourism which would result from the forum.
