NEAR Secretary General Ok-chae Kim met with Chief Secretary Qín Zi of the International Ibis Forum Committee, China and discussed cooperative means through the Ibis among regional governments in Northeast Asia on Tuesday, May 21, 2019.

At the meeting, Chief Secretary Qin Zi invited NEAR as a lead agency to the Second Ibis International Forum which will be held in October of this year. Secretary General Kim expressed his interest and anticipation in attending the forum. Also, he wished the event every success for the strengthening of friendly relationships of countries in the region of Northeast Asia as well as that of Korea, China, and Japan, in hopes of expanding the activities throughout Northeast Asia.

The endangered Ibis was driven to extinction on the Korean Peninsula 40 years ago due to overfishing and contamination of their natural habitat. Beginning with China, a restoration project has been underway in Korea and Japan since seven Ibises were discovered in Shanxi Province, China in 1981. This beautiful bird is a symbol of friendship, exchange, and environmental protection in Korea, China, and Japan.
