At the end of last year, the NEAR Secretariat sent certificates of merit and prizes in the name of the NEAR Secretary General to the Japanese winners of the 8th NEAR Youth Art Contest.

In response, Akita Prefecture, which had initially planned to hold the awards ceremony at its prefectural government office, held the ceremonies at each school due to the spread of Covid–19 and warnings of heavy snow. Akita Prefectural Odate Keio High School, which participated in the contest, held a separate awards delivery ceremony for the winners.

The teacher in charge stated that the contest was a valuable opportunity for students to be able to take part in global exchange despite the difficult situation caused by the Covid–19 pandemic. Akita Prefecture, which took part in this contest for the first time, said that it will make continuous efforts to raise the profile of the contest through information sharing with other schools in the prefecture.

Meanwhile, a total of 32 entries were submitted to the contest by two Japanese members. Out of the 32 entries, one was awarded the Encouragement Award and two were awarded the Special Recognition Award.
