On May 10, the NEAR Secretariat invited two NEAR Honorary Ambassadors from Ulsan Metropolitan City and held a ceremony where the new certificates of appointment were awarded to extend the term of appointment. Afterwards, they had a meeting with the NEAR Secretariat staff.

This award ceremony was attended by Mr. Yang Euyseok, Vice President of the Korea Energy Economics Institute and Mr. Seo Byoung Ki, Associate Professor at the School of Business Administration – Finance & Accounting of Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology. They discussed how to revitalize the promotion of NEAR.

NEAR Secretary-General Kim Ok-chae explained how he started the program to appoint NEAR ambassadors and asked them to promote NEAR hereafter. The ambassadors stressed the importance of the role played by local governments in terms of international cooperation. Then, they responded that they would make their best effort to promote NEAR in the local community.

The NEAR Secretariat first appointed local opinion leaders as NEAR Honorary Ambassadors in 2020.  Based on their abundant knowledge and experience, they are able to communicate directly with the community residents of each member regional government to promote NEAR. Currently there are 41 working honorary ambassadors from five countries: China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia and Russia.
