Since opening in 1981, the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design (TAD) has become home to one of the greatest art collections of the 20th century in Japan, which includes works by Picasso and Miro, as well as posters and designed goods. In order to allow members of the general public in Japan to gain familiarity with the world-class collection, the museum relocated to Kansui Park, which is visited by 1.4 million people annually, mainly by young families. The museum was renamed the "Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art" and will be fully operational from August 26 of this year. The TAD, which inherited the ideology of a modern art gallery, focuses on development, at the same time placing an emphasis on design as a museum that “connects art and design.” It was partially opened to the public from March 25. On the third floor, special areas have been installed, including design exhibitions, touch panels to enjoy poster collections, and hands-on workshops such as atelier and open production by artists. On the rooftop of the TAD, play equipment, inspired by onomatopoeic sounds designed by the renowned graphic designer Taku Satoh, have been installed. The TAD and the stunning views of Tateyama Mountain may be enjoyed by whole families, by grown-ups and children alike.
