NEAR Secretary General Kim Ok-chae and the NEAR Secretariat staff received an invitation from Consul General Maruyama Kouhei and attended a luncheon held at the Consul General’s official residence located in Suyeong-gu, Busan on November 5.
Secretary General Kim gave a presentation on the roles of Japanese member governments such as Hyogo Prefecture and Shimane Prefecture at the inception of NEAR, the Association of North East Asia Regional Governments. He asked for support from the Consulate General of Japan in Busan so that exchange and cooperation between local governments in Korea and Japan can generate mutual prosperity going forward.
Consul General Maruyama stated that he is a native of Tottori Prefecture, a NEAR member. He also expressed regret at the limited exchange and contact between the Korean and Japanese governments due to current diplomatic conflict and Covid-19. He said that exchange between local governments in non-political areas such as business or culture was important.
