History
- In April 27, 1922 Yakutia was granted the status of an autonomous republic.
- Its present name as a republic was received in 1990 when the Declaration of Sovereignty of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) was signed in September 27, 1990.
- The republic's first president, Mikhail Nikolayev, was elected December 20, 1991.
- In December 24, 1996 he was re-elected for another term of five years.
History
- It is the biggest region and occupies one fifth of the total territory of Russia. The Republic of Sakha is a land of mountains and plateaus, which occupy over 70% of the territory. The territory has a complex geology, correspondingly rich in raw materials, the full extent of which is still unknown. The republic is located in the permafrost area.
