Joseon Dynasty: Districts of Jinju in the west and Dongnae (modern-day Busan) in the east were merged to form Gyeongsangnam-do.
1925: The provincial capital was originally located in Jinju, then moved in 1925 to Busan.
1963: In 1963, Busan separated from Gyeongsangnam-do to become a Directly Governed City (Jikhalsi).
1983: The provincial capital moved from Busan to Changwon.

In the east of Gyeongsangnam-do, there stood the Taebaeksanmaek Mountain Range. The Nakdonggang flows from north to south passing through the central part of the province. The Sobaeksanmaek Mountain Range standing on the west of the province borders on Jeollanam-do. Gyeongsangnam-do is topographically flat and low land.
The western mountain area is the steepest region of the province, which includes Jirisan (1,915m), Deokyusan (1,614m), and Baekunsan (1,279m). The area near Jirisan is the steepest. Many basins in the mountains form the main production areas of the region
