History

  • 1915: By the end of the 19th century the Siberian railroad had been built, that crossed a part of Altai Region and by 1915 the Altai railroad had been completed, that connected Barnaul and Semipalatinsk.
  • July 1917:  Altai Region was founded in July, 1917 with Barnaul as a capital. This province existed till 1925.
  • 1925~1937: From 1925 till 1937, Altai Region  was a part of West – Siberian Region.
  • 1937: Altai Region was founded

Topographic Feature and Characteristics

  •  Altai Region belongs to two landscape types: West – Siberian Plain and Altai – Sayan Mountains. The mountain part spreads to the plain part in the east and south. Almost all landscape areas of Russia are present in  Altai Region - steppe and forest steppe, taiga, mountains and reach river ecosystems. In the west part it borders on Eastern Kazakhstan, in the north and south – east it borders with Novosibirskaya and Kemerovskaya oblasts, in the south – east part it borders with the Altai Republic. The total are of  Altai Region is 167,85 thousand square kilometers. The length from west to east is 600 kilometers, from north to south 400 kilometers. Time difference with Moscow is 3 hours. Air length from Barnaul to Moscow comprises 3600 kilometers.

Geography/Climate
  • Area : 167,996㎢
  • Location : Altai Region is located in the south-east of West Siberia at the border of continental Asia 3600 km from Moscow. Its Region is 168 000 km², it takes the 24th place in the Russian Federation and the 10th place in Siberian Federal District. In the north Altai Region borders on Novosibirsk region, in the east - Kemerovo region, the south-eastern border is with the Republic of Altai, in the south-west and west the state border with Kazakhstan , its length is 843,6 km.
    Altai Region has large-sized raw materials and raw material processing plants located in close proximity to each other. Freight railroads and transcontinental railroads intersect in the region. Furthermore, the region has access to a highway which connects Russia, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan and is linked to the Central Asian Railway and the Trans-Siberian Railway. The region also possesses strong transport infrastructure, such as international flights. Its geographical location and easy accessibility are advantages when it comes to the strengthening of economic and trade cooperation with other countries.
  • Climate : The climate is temperate continental; it is formed as a result of frequent changes of air masses coming from the Atlantic, Arctic, Eastern Siberia and Central Asia. Average temperatures are favorable, 0.5-2.1°C. Average maximum of high temperatures in July is 26-28°C; low temperatures reach 40-41°C. Average minimum of low temperatures in January is 20-24°C; absolute winter minimum is -50-55°C. Frost-free period lasts about 120 days. The most dry and hot is the western flat part of the region.
Water resources
  • The main rivers are the Ob, the Biya, the Katun, the Aley, and the Charysh. The main waterway of the region is the Ob; its length within the region is 493 km, the river is formed by the confluence of the Biya and Katun.

  • With mild weather in Southern West Siberia, Altai Region is a vacation destination which has plenty of historical and cultural sites, while promoting the development of tourism and leisure sports.
  • Altai Region has mineral hot springs, clean air, natural medicinal herbs, medicinal mud from the steppes, sanatorium resorts with medical facilities, and organic food, which make the region an ideal place, attracting tourists who are in need of rest and rejuvenation.
  • Popular tourist attractions of the region include tourist and recreational special economic zone “The Turquiose Katun (river)”, gambling zone “The Siberian Coin”, and resort city “Belokurikha,” among many others.

  • Industry, agriculture, and trade account for over 50 percent of the GRDP of Altai Region’s economy.
Current Status of Industry
  • The processing industry makes up over 80 percent of all industry. It includes food, machinery, coke production, chemical engineering, pharmaceutical industry, and the manufacturing of rubber and plastic products.
  • The agro-industrial complex of Altai Region makes up a large share of the Region’s economy. The major industries of the complex are crop production, industrial crop production, and livestock breeding. Altai Region ranks first in the area of arable land in Russia and occupies one third of the arable land in the Siberian Federal District.
  • The region produces more livestock products than any other region in Russia. It ranks fourth in milk production and sixth in beef production.
Major Products
  • Altai Region is one of the Russia’s largest producers of organic food. The region ranks first in the production of flour, wheat, cheese, and dairy products, second in the production of butter, third in the production of dietary supplements, and fourth in the production of spaghetti.
