The 8th National Parliament separated Bayanulgii from Khovd Province and established an independent Bayan-Ulgii Province in July 1940

Bayanulgii is located between the west and northwest of Mongol-Altal winkle region. There are approximately 80 lakes with clear water, 100 streams and rivers and 200 ponds and wells in Dayan, Hoton, and Horgo Region. Tolbo and Achit Lakes are very famous for fishing as they have rich fish resources. Also, there are big rivers as well, such as Khovd, Tsagaan, Sogoog, Yolt, Sagsai, Bulgan.
Bayan-Ulgii Aimag is the major city for the Kazah race in Mongolia. The 88.7% of the population is Kazah race, 7.2% is Urianhai race, 1.5% is Dorvod race, and 1% is the Tyva race. The height is 1,301~4,374m high above sea level. The 95.3% of the area has height of over 1,600m above sea level.

Geography/Climate	Area : 47,400㎢ Location : It borders the Shinjan-Uigur of China across the Altai Mountains to the west on 450km, Uuliin Altai of Russia across the Siilhemii Mountains to the north on 225km, Uvs Aimag to the east on 165km, and Uvs Aimag to the east on 165km, and Hovd Aimag to the southeast on 450km. Climate : It has a continental climate and high temperature difference between day and night because it is located at the Northern Hemisphere of the earth. The annual rainfall is 102.6mm. It is cold because of its high sea level altitude. The annual rainfall of Altai Nuruu surrounded with high mountains reached up to 400~500m. It is located at a desert region while it has also a variety in temperature and ecosystem. The annual average wind velocity is 4~9m/s. The temperature ranges from 32 degrees to 30 degrees below zero.
