History

  • 1707 -Abacan City was built as a fortress. Khakassia was incorporated into Imperial Russia.
  • 1727 – Khakassia was officially confirmed as a Russian territory in a boundary treaty between Russia and China.
  • 1923 – Khakassia established as an oblast.
  • 1930 – Autonomy was granted to the oblast.
  • 1991 – Khakassia was given full autonomous republic status.
  • 1992 – It received the name 'the Republic of Khakassia' through the Federation Treaty.
  • 1995 – The Constitution of the Republic was adopted.

Geography/Climate
  • Area: 61,600 км²
  • Location:Republic of Khakassia is located in the southwestern part of Eastern Siberia and on the left bank of the Yenisei River. It extends 460 km from north to south and 200 km from west to east.
  • The Republic borders Krasnoyarsk Krai in the north and east, the Altai Republic in the southwest, the Tuva Republic in the south, and the Kemerovo Region in the west.
  • Climate: The Republic has a continental climate. Its summers are hot and dry. Its winters are cold with little snow. The average temperature in July is +16.8°C, and in January is –23.4°C. The Republic has more sunny days than any other region around.

Cultural Heritage
  • Republic of Khakassia is characterized by abundant cultural heritages of history.
  • It's difficult to get an accurate count of how many archaeological remains are, because a lof of them are buried under the ground.
  • In the early 2000s, when experts saw an archaeological map of Khakassia, it was estimated there were about 30,000-32,000 archaeological remains. However, the archaeological remains officially registerd amounts to 13,500, including ancient tombs, ancient settlements, fortress, and sculptures inscribed on a rock. Significant numbers of the remains retained in the Siberian Archaeology Foundation were excavated in Khakassia.
