○ On June 12, Gangwon Province started to use its new name, “Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province”.

○ This is the first time in 628 years that the province has changed its name since it was established in 1395. It has been 15 years since the first discussions began in 2008.

○ In the past, Gangwon Province has faced considerable difficulties in regional development due to the supply of clean water to the Seoul metropolitan area, the need to preserve forests, and many regulations due to the nature of the border region, but with the establishment of the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, great development is expected as the four core regulations on environment, forest, military, and agriculture will be eliminated, special exceptions will be made, and substantial autonomy will be granted by the central government.
