On August 23, Secretary-General LIM Byung-jin visited Tianjin City and held discussions with LUAN Jianzhang, director of the Foreign Affairs Office of Tianjin City. The purpose of the meeting was to exchange perspectives on enhancing mutual cooperation.

Mr. Lim introduced the historical background and objectives of NEAR, its membership details, organizational structure, secretariat, and recent undertakings. He also highlighted the vibrant engagement of member regions across six countries in Northeast Asia, including China. He expressed optimism that Tianjin, as a pivotal and significant city in the Northeast Asian region, would consider becoming a part of NEAR. Such an affiliation would foster increased exchange and collaboration with local governments in the Northeast Asian area.

In response, Mr. Luan conveyed his deep appreciation for NEAR's pivotal role in promoting peaceful development and common prosperity in Northeast Asia. He affirmed that Tianjin, as a prominent city in the region, also aspired to join NEAR. Mr. Luan committed to actively pursuing the city's membership in NEAR, with the intention of officially joining as a new member during the upcoming General Assembly in October.

Tianjin has previously participated as an observer in NEAR activities. Notably, it took part in the 9th General Assembly in 2012 and engaged in the NEAR International Forum and NEAR Youth Art Contest, commemorating the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and China in 2022.

The meeting was attended by two representatives from Tianjin City: TENG Jianzhen, director of the Asia Department, and HAN Yuhua, a staff member of the same department. Additionally, three representatives from NEAR were present, including CHO Sun-hwa, acting deputy director of the International Cooperation Department.
