History

  • 1910: Incheon-bu was established
  • 1914: Part of Incheon-bu and Bupyeong-gun were merged to form Bucheon-gun
  • July 1, 1981: Became Incheon City (Under the direct control of the government)
  • February 1, 1995: Incheon City was renamed to Incheon Metropolitan City
  • March 1, 1995: Ganghwa-gun, Ongjin-gun, Gimpo-gun, and Geomdan-myeon merged with Incheon Metropolitan City

Topographic Features

  • Except for Mt. Manisan (469m) and Mt. Gyeyangsan (395m), most mountains in the Incheon area is no higher than 300m above sea level. With hilly mountains well-developed along the coast, there is only limited amount of flat land in the area. Incheon has a rail coast, with a long, jagged coastline in addition to the numerous islands. There are 152 islands off the coast altogether, 113 of which are inhabited.
