History

  • 1914 : Daejeon County is established.
  • 1949 : Elevated to a city.
  • 1989 : Elevated to Directly Governed City status, making nearby Daedeok County a part of the city.
  • 1995 : Renamed Daejeon Metropolitan City.

Regional Characteristics

  • Daejeon is called ‘Jungdo,’ meaning it is located in the central region of the Korean peninsula. It serves as a hub of transportation as it is a gateway to Youngnam and Honam. Moreover, the Gyeongbu and Honam expressways and national highways diverge in all directions from Daejeon.
  • It is a core city for research and development, securing source technology and the best brains of the Daedeok Science Complex, which is the cradle of South Korea’s high-tech science.
