History

  • 1018 : Haeyang-do and Gangnam-do (Gangnam-do and Jeollabuk-do) Provinces are incorporated into Jeolla-do Province.
  • 1895 : Jeolla-do Province is divided into Jeonju-bu, Namwon-bu, Naju-bu, and Jeju-bu.
  • 1896 : As the 13-province system is introduced, and Jeolla-do Province is divided into south and north, the South is named Jeollanam-do Province.

Regional Characteristics

  • Jeollanam-do Province is located in the southwestern part of South Korea. With China to the west and Japan to the southeast, it is the center of Northeast Asia, the starting point of the Eurasian continent, and the gateway to the Pacific.
  • The southwest and northwest areas at the river basins consist of vast plains, where various kinds of agricultural products grow on the fertile soil. In particular, the Naju Plain with the Yeongsangang River basin is one of Korea’s most prominent breadbaskets, along with the Honam Plain in Jeollabuk-do Province.

  • Traditional Painting : Jindo Ullimsanbang Atelier, Hwasun Yang Paeng-son’s Birth Place, Haenam Nogudang Cottage, Mokpo Namnong Memorial Hall, etc.
  • Dolmens : 20,000 thousand dolmens are scattered around the province, especially in the whole area of Hyosan-ri Dogok-myeon Hwasun-gun and Daeshin-ri Chunyang-myeon (enlisted as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage).
  • Other Cultural Heritages : Ssitgimgut (Sharman ritual for cleaning the deceased souls) in Jindo, Pilam Lecture Hall in Jangseong, historic sites of Dr. Wang In in Yeongam
