Umnugovi Province was established in February 1931 According to the decision of the 87 government of Mongolia on November 9, 1930, Regulations to change to autonomous administration had been passed.
A provisional commission regarding Umnugovi Province was established on 21 March 1931.
All districts in Umnugovi had been established from 25 March to 4 Apr 1931.

It includes many mountains with over 2,000m height in the Altai Mountains, as well as sand mountains and steppes. In other words, it has a wide area consisting of deserts, Gobbi, and steppes. Soil of Umnugovi mostly consists of light dark gray soil in semi-desert steppe. A rare medical plant with 250 small leaves grow in this province. In addition, there are Gobi bears, leopards, black tail mountain sheep, and mountain goats, which are rare in the world and protected nationally.

Geography/Climate	Area : 165,000㎢ Location: Umnogovi Aimag is 1300~1500m above the sea level. The east-west distance, from Ganzagat Mt, To Ongonulaan is approximately 700km, and the south-north distance, from Gashuun Mt. To Akhar Mt, is approximately 400km. Umnugovi borders the People’s Republic of China on 798km, Bayannuur Province on 394km, Ovurkhangai Province on 245km, Dundgovi Province on 387, Dornogovi Province on 243km, respectively. Climate : The climate is so capricious that the temperature is 30~39 degrees in the summer and reaches down to 20 degrees below zero in the winter, and the wind speed is 5~15m/s, sometimes 34~45m/s. The average annual rainfall is 133mm.
