After Erdene Bishrelt Zasagt Xan Province was established in the late 16th Century, it had occupied a region from Altai Mountains in the west to Hangai Mountains in the east and from the source of Enissei River to Great Gobbi Desert in the south for approximately 200 years by 18th Century.
By 1923, Zasagtkhan Province was established with 21 Hosho and Tamga by three followers of a saint. After that, the name was changed to Khantaishir Ulaan Province. This served as the foundation of Zavkhan Province.

Geography/Climate	Area : 82,500㎢ Climate: The climate is capricious. The average temperature in January is 20~30 degrees below zero. The Tosontsengel soum, one of the coldest regions in Mongolia has recorded 53 degrees below zero. The annual rainfall is 80~100mm in the west and 200~206mm in other parts of the province. Zavkhan is divided into three regions: Khangai, Steppe, and Govi. It is cold in the Khangai Mountain Region, and dry and warm in the Govi.
