September 26, 1937: Vostochno-Sibirsky Kray was divided into Irkutskaya and Chitinskaya Oblasts.
March 1, 2008: The present day Zabaikalsky Krai was formed by uniting Chitinskaya Oblast and Aginsky Buryatsky Autonomous Okrug.

Zabaikalsky is located in the middle Taiga and steppe zones. More than 50% of its territory are covered with mountain Taiga forests (Dahurian larch, pine, cedar, and birch): grass and mixed herb steppe cover southern areas and valley floors. The largest in Russia deposit of copper - Udokanskoye - is located in the territory of Zabaikalsky with the resources of 20 million tons. Zabaikalsky is the main developing resource based on nuclear industry of Russia

Geography/Climate	Area : 431,892㎢ Location : It borders the Republic of Buryatia and Irkutsk Region to the south and northwest, Republic of Sakha(Yakutia) and Amur Region to the northeast and east, and Mongolia and China on 5,000㎞ to the south and southeast. Climate : Zabaikalsky has a severe continental climate, with cold, dry, sunny winters with average January temperatures from -26 to -33°C. Summers are very warm, with average July temperatures from +17 to +21°C. Annual precipitation is 120~200㎜, most of it falling in summer.

Industry	Industrial structure: Mining is the main industry of Zabaikalsky Region: gold, molybdenum, tin, lead, zinc, and coal. Ferrous metallurgy is developed as well as machine-building - tools, compressors and refrigerators; forest and wood-processing industries; light and food industries.
Product	Mineral resources : copper, molybdenum, gold, tin, tantalum and metallic ores Agriculture : Grain, potato, vegetable, oriental melon, milk, meat, egg, honey, wool, fur. Cattle- and sheep-breeding accounts for 70% of the territory’s agricultural production.
