History

  • 1619: Eniseisk Town (now Yeniseisk City) was founded.
  • 1628: Krasny Yar Town was founded by Andrey Dubenskoy.
  • 1690 : “Krasnoyarsk”has received official status of the city, when Siberia was finally joined to Russia.
  • 1822: Yenisei Governorate (State) was established. Krasnoyarsk City which had a convenient transport and geographical conditions came to be the administrative city (the seat of a prefecture).
  • 1895~1897 : “Trans-Siberian Railway”was built in the Yeniseisk Region.
  • 1917: After Krasnoyarsk learned of the overthrow of the imperial autocracy and October Revolution, Soviet power was established.
  • 1920: Soviet power was restored.
  • 1925: Siberia Kray was formed with the administrative city Novonikolaevske (now Novosibirsk City) and Yenisei Governorate (State) was incorporated into Siberia Kray.
  • 1934: Krasnoyarsk Kray was founded, which consisted of 32 districts isolatedfrom East Siberian and West Siberian Krais.

Topographic Feature and Characteristics

  • Krasnoyarsk Krai is a region with good supplies of water. One of the largest rivers in the world Yenisei flows from south to north. There are over 323,000 lakes each over 300 m long and above 10 hectares. Besides, a great number of lakes came into being once in several years during intensive snow melting.

Geography/Climate
  • Area : 2,366,800㎢
  • Location : The krai lies in the middle of Siberia, and belongs to Siberian Federal District, stretching 3,000㎞ from Sayan Mountains on the south along the Yenisei River to Taymyr Peninsula in the north. It shares borders with Tyumen, Tomsk, Irkutsk, and Kemerovo Oblasts, the Khakass, Tyva, and Sakha Republics, and Kara Sea and Laptev Sea of the Arctic Ocean on the north.
  • Climate : The climate is strongly continental with big variations of temperature during one year. For the central and southern regions where most of the krai`s population lives long winters and short, hot summers are of characteristic. The territory of Krasnoyarsk Krai experiences conditions of three climate belts: Arctic, Sub-Arctic, and moderate. While in the north there are less than 40 days with temperature higher than 10°C, on the south there are about 110~120 such days. The average temperature of January is -36℃ in the north and -18℃ in the south. The average temperature of July is 10℃ in the north and 20℃ in the south.

Industry
  • Industrial structure : Large power resources was enabled creating a big metallurgical chain of plants: Krasnoyarsk Power Station - Krasnoyarsk Aluminum Plant - Achinsk Aluminum Plant - Krasnoyarsk Metallurgical Plant. Machine-building plants of Krasnoyarsk Krai produce goods for civil and military purpose. Wood-working and pulp and paper industries are also developed as well as chemical industry.
  • Industrial infrastructure : Krasnoyarsk Region possesses the largest in Russia potential for developing hydropower industry. Some of the largest hydro power stations in the world were built on the Yenisei River. There are 20 power stations in action and one being constructed in Krasnoyarsk Krai.

  • Mining industry : The plants of Krasnoyarsk Krai produces about 27% of Russian aluminum ; Norilsky nickel produces over 70% of Russian copper, 80% of nickel, 70% of cobalt, and over 90% of platinum group metals.
