History

  • In 1871, abolition of the Han System places the old Shimane and Hamada provinces in the current area of Shimane Prefecture. Later that year, Oki becomes part of Tottori. In 1876, Hamada Prefecture merged with Shimane and is named Shimane Prefecture. Also, Tottori Prefecture merges in the same year. However, five years later, in 1881, the current portion of the Tottori Prefecture separates and the current border is formed.

Topographic Features

  • Shimane Prefecture is situated in the south-west of Honshu, Japan's largest island, bordering with Tottori Prefecture to the east, Yamaguchi Prefecture to the west and Hiroshima Prefecture to the south; and facing onto the Japan Sea (East Sea) to the north. Between 40 and 80 kilometers north of the Shimane coastline are the Oki Islands and further afield are the Korean Peninsula and the Russian Primorsky Territory.
