History

  • Liaoning Province is abbreviated as “Liao.” Its name means “eternal tranquility in the Liao River Basin.” The Jinniu Mountain Relic Site unearthed in Yingkou indicates that humans have lived in the region for 280,000 years.
  • Liaoning Province is the birthplace of the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911), the last feudal dynasty in China. Nurhachi and his descendants founded its capital in Xinbin County of Fushun City, Liaoyang City, and Shenyang City successively.
  • In 1949, at the beginning of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Liaoning Province was divided into two provinces, Liaodong and Liaoxi. In August 1954, the two provinces were abolished and merged into Liaoning Province.
