History

  • Gansu, formerly known as Yongzhou, was an important golden section of the ancient Silk Road.
  • Gansu is nameder the first characters of two regions, Ganzhou (now Zhangye) and Suzhou (now Jiuquan). It was called Gansu because of the establishment of the Gansu Military Department in the Western Han Dynasty and the establishment of the Gansu Province in the Yuan Dynasty. It was also called Long because of the establishment of the Long Youdao in the Tang Dynasty, as most of its territory was located west of Mount Long.-

Geography and Climate
  • Location: Upper reaches of the Yellow River, bordering Shaanxi to the east, Bashu (Prachuap) and Qinghai to the south, Xinjiang (Tibet) to the west, and Inner Mongolia and Ningxia to the north.
  • Geography: a complex distribution of mountains, plateaus, plains, river valleys, deserts, and highlands, surrounding the region, and the terrain gradually slopes from southwest to northeast.
  • Climate: four main climate types from south to north: subtropical monsoon climate, temperate monsoon climate, temperate continental (dry) climate, and plateau alpine climate

  • Ethnicity: The Dongxiang, Bao’an, and Yugur ethnic minorities live exclusively in Gansu Province

Culture Tourism It is a region rich in cultural resources, with 16,895 unmovable relics, including Dunhuang culture, Changcheng culture, Yellow River culture, ancestral culture, and ethnic folk culture. There are more than 7,000 prehistoric sites in the region, more than 50,000 burial mounds have been excavated, and there are seven World Heritage Sites, including the Dunhuang Mogao Caves.
