History

  • Yamaguchi Prefecture, in its current form, was established on November 15, 1871 (1871, Meiji 4) following the abolition of feudal domains in July of that year. It was formed by merging the former Yamaguchi domain with the four provinces of Toyo, Kishu, Iwakuni, and Suo, thus encompassing the previous territories of Nagato and Suo. At that time, the former Yamaguchi domain office was retained and designated as the new prefectural office, and the name Yamaguchi Prefecture was inherited.
    * The abolition of feudal prefectures was an the administrative reform on August 28, 1871 during the Meiji Restoration, when the previous feudal domains were abolished and replaced by centralized prefectural administration under the control of the central government.

Topographic Features

  • Yamaguchi Prefecture is located in the southwestern part of Honshu, and it is highly regarded as a livable prefecture with abundant nature and a warm, favorable climate. It is considered a pleasant place to live nationwide. The prefecture has an area of 6,113 square kilometers and a population of approximately 1.34 million people.
  • With a long coastline stretching about 1,500 kilometers, Yamaguchi Prefecture offers contrasting landscapes between the beautiful, gentle coastal scenery of the Seto Inland Sea National Park and the rugged erosional coastline represented by the Kitakanmon National Park in nortern Nagato. It presents vivid contrasts from the northern to the southern regions.
Moreover, the green mountains located at the western end of the Chugoku region are home to scenic spots such as Akiyoshidai National Park, which boasts the largest karst plateau and limestone caves in Japan. These mountains showcase a diverse range of ever-changing landscapes throughout the four seasons.
