History

  • Qinghai Province, located in the northwest of China, is situated in the northeastern part of the "Qinghai-Tibet Plateau," also known as the "Roof of the World." The province derives its name from Qinghai Lake, China's largest inland saltwater lake.
  • The province is known as the “Source of Rivers” or the “Three-River Source” because it is the origin of the Changjiang River, the Yellow River, and the Lancang River. It also holds the prestigious title of the “Water Tower of China.”

  • Location: To the northeast, it borders Gansu Province; to the northwest, the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region; to the southeast, Sichuan Province; and to the southwest, the Tibet Autonomous Region. Qinghai serves as a crucial link connecting Xinjiang with inland China.
  • Landscape: The province features a terrain that is generally high in the west and lower in the east. It is characterized by clustered mountain ranges, with widely distributed peaks, lakes, gorges, and basins.

  • Ethnicity: Qinghai Province is home to 55 ethnic groups, with ethnic minorities making up 49.47% of the total population. The main ethnic groups include the Tibetans, Hui, Tu, Salar, and Mongols. The Tu and Salar ethnic groups are unique to Qinghai Province.
