In the Yamagata prefectural governors election held on January 24, Yoshimura Mieko, 69-years old, was elected to a fourth consecutive term, winning a landslide victory against her opponent, a candidate of the government party.

Since she was first elected as the Governor of Yamagata Prefecture in 2009, Governor Yoshimura has contributed to the realization of Affluent Yamagata and the Local Revitalization of Yamagata among other agenda by promoting industries through advanced research and development, creating jobs through attracting businesses, and establishing a comprehensive support system for the issues of a shrinking, aging population.

Since it joined NEAR as a member in 1996, Yamagata Prefecture has carried out active exchange with NEAR member regional governments such as Heilongjiang Province, China.
