History

  • 1395 : Named Gangwon-do Province.
  • 1896 : As the 13-province system is introduced, the four counties which belonged to Chungju-bu are returned to Gangwon-do Province. Chuncheon is designated as the capital bu of the province, and a governor is put in charge of provincial administration.
  • 1954 : Yangyang County, Inje County, Yanggu County, Hwacheon County, and part of Cheorwon County and Goseong County, which are located south of the Military Demarcation Line, become a part of South Korea.
  • 2021 : The administrative districts of Gangwon-do Province currently consist of seven cities and 11 counties.

Regional Characteristics

  • Gangwon Stateis a mountainous area. It is divided into two regions by the Taebaek Mountains, which are the spine of the Korean Peninsula: Yeongdong on the east and Yeongseo on the west.
  • Gangwon Stateis the source of the Hangang River and Nakdonggang River, which are the lifeline of South Korea. All kinds of fish, including Korean native species, inhabit the headwaters of the Bukhangang River, a pristine area with a well-preserved ecosystem. With the Peace Dam in Hwacheon County, the Hwacheon Dam and Chuncheon Dam, the Soyang Dam, the Uiam Dam, etc., the area is an important source of drinking and industrial water.
