History

  • Okinawa, which was once the independent Ryukyu Kingdom, flourished through trade with neighboring countries, including China. In 1609, it was invaded by the Satsuma Domain (present-day Kagoshima area) and integrated into Japan's feudal system at the time. In 1872, the Meiji government transformed the Ryukyu Kingdom into the Ryukyu Domain, and in 1879, with the abolition of domains and the establishment of prefectures, it became a part of Japan as Okinawa Prefecture. During the final stages of World War II in 1945, Okinawa became the only site of ground battles involving the full mobilization of its residents, resulting in the loss of many precious lives. After the war, it came under U.S. military administration and was returned to Japan in 1972.

Topographic Features

  • Okinawa Prefecture is located to the east of the Asian continent, at the westernmost end of the Japanese archipelago, which stretches in an arc. It is a prefecture composed of numerous islands scattered across a vast sea area approximately 1,000 km east to west and 400 km north to south, including 48 inhabited islands. Situated in the subtropical marine climate of the Nansei Islands (Ryukyu Archipelago), Okinawa is surrounded by a stunning natural environment, featuring beautiful coral reefs and rare wildlife. Through trade and exchanges with China and various Southeast Asian countries, it has cultivated a unique culture over the centuries. The 1.45 million residents of Okinawa, known as Uchinanchu (Okinawan people), take pride in their identity, honor their ancestors, and cherish traditional ceremonies. They actively engage with people both within and outside Japan, dedicating themselves to the development of their islands.

Major Event
  • Hari
    • Hari is believed to have originated in China and is a boat rowing race event held to pray for abundant catches and maritime safety. The boats used in the race are called "paryongseon" (dragon boats). Hari races held in various regions of Okinawa are generally conducted on May 4 in the lunar calendar. However, the Naha Hari is scheduled between May 3 and 5 on the Gregorian calendar to coincide with Golden Week, making it accessible for tourists to enjoy
  • Tug-of-war
    • In Okinawa, tug-of-war events take place from the lunar months of June to August (around July to September in the Gregorian calendar). These tug-of-war events are characterized by two ropes—male rope and female rope—which are connected by a large wooden pole. The participants pull in opposite directions, with one team pulling to the east and the other to the west. Some tug-of-war events are known as "fighting ropes," where the teams clash intensely.
    • Originally a rural festival, the tug-of-war was believed to "pull in a bountiful harvest" and was associated with wishes for good fortune, abundant catches, and protection from pests, as well as rituals for rain. The outcome of the event was often interpreted as a prediction of prosperity or misfortune. While many places hold the event once a year, some other places hold the event once every few years, or sometimes even twice a year, depending on the region.
    • The three major tug-of-war events in Okinawa are the "Yonabaru Great Tug-of-War," the "Itoman Great Tug-of-War," and the "Naha Great Tug-of-War."

  • Eisa
    • Eisa is a traditional ceremony that was originally held during the lunar Chuseok to honor ancestors, but it has since become a representative traditional game of Okinawa. The exact origins are unclear, but one theory is that it began with a "chanting" by the Buddhist monk Taichu Shonin of the Jodo sect in the early 17th century.
    • The name "Eisa" is believed to have originated from "Esamoro," which appears in the Ryukyu's ancient anthology Omorososhi, or from the chant "Eisa Eisa Hiyaruga Eisa" performed during the dance. In Okinawa, during the lunar Chuseok, young people in some regions perform Eisa as they parade through the streets, a tradition known as "Michi June." The style of Eisa varies by region, with some focusing on large drums and taiko, others using paranku (thin, small drums), and some performing Eisa using only hand movements without any drums. In recent years, the number of creative Eisa groups has also been increasing.
